How to clean the sauna

Sauna Cleaning Step-by-Step

A thorough sauna cleaning is recommended a couple of times a year.

The sauna is a favorite place for Finns and Scandinavians to relax, both at home and at the summer cottage. A thorough cleaning should be carried out a few times a year, although the required frequency naturally depends on how often the sauna is used and by how many people. With these tips, you can keep your sauna clean and fresh.

Instructions for Cleaning a Sauna

  • Start by sweeping loose dirt and debris from the benches and floor with a broom.
  • Wet the benches with warm water. This opens the wood grain and makes it easier to remove dirt. Either use a shower or fill a SINI bucket with warm water and pour it over the benches.
  • Fill the bucket with warm water and a cleaning agent, for example a universal cleaner or dishwashing liquid. Do not spray cleaning agents directly onto wooden surfaces. Avoid chlorine-based cleaning products, as chlorine can be absorbed into the wood and released into the air when the sauna is heated.
  • Wash the benches surfaces, the sides of the benches, and the gaps between them using for example a bathroom scourer that you wet in the cleaning solution.
  • Also clean the undersides of the benches, where sweat and dirt can easily accumulate.
  • Always scrub in the direction of the wood grain.
  • Rinse the benches at least twice to remove all cleaning agent residue. Finish by rinsing with cold water, which closes the wood pores, helping to reduce future dirt accumulation. Remove excess water with either a clean floor squeegee or a shower squeegee
  • Finally, clean the floor using a bathroom scourer or bathroom brush.
  • Remove excess water from the floor using a floor squeegee .
  • Ensure good ventilation so the sauna can dry thoroughly.
  • Remember to clean the floor drain if there is one, and install a floor drain filter.
